California Highway Patrol seeks suspects in two cases

The California Highway Patrol is asking for the public's help in locating suspects in two cases.

One is Nathanel Alexander Smith, 44, who is suspected of being in a felony collision that left two CHP officers seriously injured, according to officer James Smith. Nathanel Smith is believed to have been driving under the influence of a controlled substance. His last known address was in Stockton, but he could be anywhere in San Joaquin County, officer Smith said.

In another case, officers are looking for a man impersonating a CHP mechanic, reportedly stopping on freeways in a compact car to assist disabled motorists with their vehicles late at night while asking drivers for money to fix their vehicles, officer Smith said. After receiving the money, the man leaves to get parts but never returns, Smith added.

The CHP has an official freeway service patrol operated by Mike's Towing Service in two construction areas ? Highway 99 in French Camp and Interstate 5 in Stockton. The service patrol, in white tow trucks clearly marked with "Freeway Service Patrol" logos on the doors, doesn't accept payment for basic services, Smith said.

Anyone with information on either case is asked to call the CHP at (209) 943-8666.
