Top Tourist Attractions In Londons Hyde Park

The next time you plan to go to London, why not book a Hyde Park hotel? London is a great place all in all, but it helps when you can walk out the front door of your hotel and be greeted with lush greenery to help soothe your tired nerves.

This is especially so when you consider the following attractions that?ll make your visits to the park all that more interesting:

The Park Itself

The first and most prominent attraction of Hyde Park is itself. The charming way the trees ring the perimeter, the lush green grass and the fresh air are enough reason to put some time in your busy schedule to just sit back and relax. There?s nothing quite like taking a daytime nap under the shade of a tree to freshen you up and get you ready for the day?s business.

Speaker?s Corner

If you?re looking to listen to a few unique points of view once you step out of your Hyde Park hotel, London has the Speaker?s Corner ? just what you?re looking for. Born as a venue for people to openly air their opinions, the Speaker?s Corner is a unique part of the park where anyone and everyone can speak their mind and engage in open debate. If you?re feeling a bit fresh, you can even chat and engage in some verbal fencing with one of the many people sharing their opinions on the corner.?

Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain

Princess Diana?s death was a blow to the people of Britain, and the fountain put up in her memory is a reflection of her attitude: inclusive and for all of the people. You can slip out of your shoes and socks to wade in the cool water if you so desire or you can quietly sit by the fountain?s edge and think a few things over as the water rushes by. This is definitely one of the more attractive sites you?ll want to visit from your Hyde Park hotel. London will take on a little more significance once you do.

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk

The tribute to Princess Di isn?t just limited to the fountain ? she also has a 7-mile walkway in her name. Ninety individual plaques commemorating the Princess of Wales dot the walk that spans Hyde Park and the adjacent Kensington Gardens. The walk itself takes you to Spencer House, Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace, St. James's Palace, and Clarence House ? locations connected with Princess Diana?s life and magnificent to behold.

The Serpentine River

This particular body of water is quite the attraction and is more a lake than an actual river. You can go swimming on the southern bank during the summer months, while you can hire boats to go rowing during other times and in the deeper parts of the lake. You can also visit the nearby Serpentine Gallery if you?re a fan of modern and contemporary art.

If you ever find yourself booking a Hyde Park hotel, London will prove to be a more welcome and relaxing place when you take the time off to appreciate what the nearby park has to offer. After all, this is much more than a simple park ? it?s one of the ?green lungs? of London that offers respite and fresh air to any and all weary travellers.

7 Million Americans Could Lose Health Insurance Thanks To ...

Boy, the Obamacare fun just never stops. Today?s news comes from the CBO and The Washington Times ? Obamacare could force 7 million Americans to lose their health insurance coverage. So much for the promise ?If you like your insurance plan, you can keep it.?

President Obama?s health care law will push 7 million people out of their job-based insurance coverage ? nearly twice the previous estimate, according to the latest estimates from the Congressional Budget Office released Tuesday.

CBO said that this year?s tax cuts have changed the incentives for businesses and made it less attractive to pay for insurance, meaning fewer will decide to do so. Instead, they?ll choose to pay a penalty to the government, totaling $13 billion in higher fees over the next decade.

But the non-partisan agency also expects fewer people to have to pay individual penalties to the IRS than it earlier projects, because of a better method for calculating incomes that found more people will be exempt.

Overall, the new health provisions are expected to cost the government $1.165 trillion over the next decade ? the same as last year?s projection. (Read More)

Insect drives robot to track down smells

Feb. 6, 2013 ? A small, two-wheeled robot has been driven by a male silkmoth to track down the sex pheromone usually given off by a female mate.

The robot has been used to characterise the silkmoth's tracking behaviours and it is hoped that these can be applied to other autonomous robots so they can track down smells, and the subsequent sources, of environmental spills and leaks when fitted with highly sensitive sensors.

The results have been published 6 February, in IOP Publishing's journal Bioinspiration and Biomimetics.

The male silkmoth was chosen as the 'driver' of the robot due to its characteristic 'mating dance' when reacting to the sex pheromone of the female. Once the male is stimulated by the pheromone it exhibits a distinctive walking pattern: straight-line and zigzagged walking consisting of several turns followed by a loop of more than 360?.

Lead author of the research, Dr Noriyasu Ando, said: "The simple and robust odour tracking behaviour of the silkmoth allows us to analyse its neural mechanisms from the level of a single neuron to the moth's overall behaviour. By creating an 'artificial brain' based on the knowledge of the silkmoth's individual neurons and tracking behaviour, we hope to implement it into a mobile robot that will be equal to the insect-controlled robot developed in this study."

The researchers, from the University of Tokyo, attached the silkmoth to a free-moving polystyrene ball at the front of the robot which was used for overall control, much like the ball in a computer mouse.

Two 40 millimetre fans were attached at the front to divert the pheromone-containing air to the on-board moth -- the researchers believe the fans are comparable to the wings of the silkmoth that flap to generate air flow across its antennae.

A 1800 millimetre wind tunnel was used in the experiments; the pheromone and robot were placed at opposite ends. Fourteen silkmoths were used in the study and all of them were able to successfully guide the robot towards the source.

The researchers also introduced a turning bias to the experiments, changing the power of one of the robot's two motors so it veered towards one side when moving. This put the silkmoth into an extraordinary situation and required it to adapt and change its behaviour.

"The best way to elicit adaptive behaviours of insects is to put them into extraordinary situations. The turning bias in our study is analogous to a situation in which we try to ride unbalanced bicycles. We need training to ride such bicycles smoothly but the silkmoth overcomes the situation with only simple and fast sensory-motor feedbacks," said Dr Ando. It is important that the chemical sensors attached to a potential robot have a short response and processing time when tracking down odours continuously, which is why the researchers also investigated the effect of a time delay between the movement of the silkmoth and the response of the motor.

"Most chemical sensors, such as semiconductor sensors, have a slow recovery time and are not able to detect the temporal dynamics of odours as insects do. Our results will be an important indication for the selection of sensors and models when we apply the insect sensory-motor system to artificial systems," continued Dr Ando.

Chemical reaction keeps stroke-damaged brain from repairing itself

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Nitric oxide, a gaseous molecule produced in the brain, can damage neurons. When the brain produces too much nitric oxide, it contributes to the severity and progression of stroke and neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. Researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute recently discovered that nitric oxide not only damages neurons, it also shuts down the brain's repair mechanisms. Their study was published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences the week of February 4.

"In this study, we've uncovered new clues as to how natural chemical reactions in the brain can contribute to brain damage?loss of memory and cognitive function?in a number of diseases," said Stuart A. Lipton, M.D., Ph.D., director of Sanford-Burnham's Del E. Webb Neuroscience, Aging, and Stem Cell Research Center and a clinical neurologist.

Lipton led the study, along with Sanford-Burnham's Tomohiro Nakamura, Ph.D., who added that these new molecular clues are important because "we might be able to develop a new strategy for treating stroke and other disorders if we can find a way to reverse nitric oxide's effect on a particular enzyme in nerve cells."

Nitric oxide inhibits the neuroprotective ERK1/2 signaling pathway

Learning and memory are in part controlled by NMDA-type glutamate receptors in the brain. These receptors are linked to pores in the nerve cell membrane that regulate the flow of calcium and sodium in and out of the nerve cells. When these NMDA receptors get over-activated, they trigger the production of nitric oxide. In turn, nitric oxide attaches to other proteins via a reaction called S-nitrosylation, which was first discovered by Lipton and colleagues. When those S-nitrosylated proteins are involved in cell survival and lifespan, nitric oxide can cause brain cells to die prematurely?a hallmark of neurodegenerative disease.

In their latest study, Lipton, Nakamura and colleagues used cultured neurons as well as a living mouse model of stroke to explore nitric oxide's relationship with proteins that help repair neuronal damage. They found that nitric oxide reacts with the enzyme SHP-2 to inhibit a protective cascade of molecular events known as the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Thus, nitric oxide not only damages neurons, it also blocks the brain's ability to self-repair.

French meet clashes in Malian city of Gao

GAO, Mali (AP) ? France's defense minister says French forces clashed with extremists firing rocket launchers near the northern Malian city of Gao.

Gao has been held by French-led forces since late January, and the clashes highlight complications for the intervention.

Jean-Yves Le Drian said on Europe-1 radio Wednesday that "it's a real war ... when we go outside of the center of cities that have been taken, we meet residual jihadists."

He said French aircraft are continuing airstrikes every night on suspected militant arms depots and mine-making sites.

France launched a military intervention Jan. 11 against Islamist extremists who had taken over northern Mali and started pushing toward the capital. A U.N.-authorized African force is starting to take over from French forces in cities that were seized at the outset of the intervention.

Work Towards A Better Future With These Awesome Self Help Tips ...

Self improvement, including positive thinking techniques, can really help you live a better life. This article provides helpful tips to get you focused on your self improvement, while improving your life and how you live it.

On the road to self improvement, treat your body with respect. If your body?s signals tell you that there is some problem, say, that you need to eat or drink something, then you need to address the issue immediately. Doing this will make your body treat you better in the future. Failing to heed your body?s warnings can set you up for disappointment later on.

For individuals with more severe problems, the ideal solution may be therapy. Books that teach self help are helpful, but do not contain the one-on-one personal touch you can get from a therapist. Sometimes, talk therapy can help you discover a breakthrough. A psychiatrist can have a discussion with you, where a book cannot.

Try to pay attention to your inner beauty and not outer. It makes no difference if you are the prettiest or wear the costliest designer clothes. It is the quality of your personality that will be the biggest measure of your life?s worth. Try to improve yourself from the inside rather than the outside.

TIP! Have a notebook or a smartphone app to jot down notes wherever you go. Carry some kind of paper with you at all times.

Establish a very detailed plan to improve your life. If you have more tangible goals in mind, you?ll be able to better resolve how you might accomplish them. If you are focused on your goals, then the obstacles between you and them will be easier to overcome.

A good character trait is being humble. We are all but tiny dots in the scope of this universe. Everyone should be willing to learn as much as they can from others. Open yourself to new ideas and other ways of thinking! Keep an open mind and you will find that others are more than willing to share their information with you.

The majority of employers that you encounter won?t care about the school you graduated from. They care about how successful you are at doing your job. Some employers, such as banks or other financial institutions, do put more weight on which school you attended, but these are rare exceptions. Really, it is much more important just to have that degree and open up your opportunities.

Rather than boasting about your myriad medals, trophies, and awards, ask others about some of their proudest moments and most notable achievements. You?ll be able to find out about the wonderful things the people you know have accomplished, bringing about a new-found respect and admiration for them.

TIP! If you avoid making decisions, then you are denying yourself opportunities. Don?t fear making decisions even if you?re not that informed about them.

Try to read encouraging books. Everyone?s idea of a positive piece of writing is different. It may be a religious bible, or alternatively a book of inspirational quotes. A tangible piece of writing to which you can return again and again can be comforting and encouraging.

Taking some small risks can help you stay happy. Many people stay in their comfort zones to avoid rejection or failure, so they aren?t as happy or fulfilled. It takes courage to take risks, but doing so can help make you happier for the future.

If you are falling sort and not meeting goals, step back and look at your issues. Take a little time to research what others have done when their goals were similar. You might be able to mimic some of their ideas or learn from their successes. This could illuminate a problem with the feasibility of your goals, your technique for achieving such goals, or even simply not allowing the time necessary to complete them.

Becoming healthier will help immensely during personal development. Feeling good is closely associated to good health. A healthy body also means that your mind will be sharper, and you may not have to spend as much money on heath care. Having a healthy life should be one of your main goals.

TIP! Use the knowledge you have and be modest in order to live your life to the fullest. Learn from your experiences because it can help you realize the difference between circumstances you can change, and those you cannot.

Personal Development

A crucial part of any personal development program is to take special care in providing for your own physical needs. Put yourself on the road to success with personal development by making sure your basic need are met, including adequate amounts of sleep, nutritious food and a regular fitness regimen. It may seem easy, but it can be quite difficult to properly care for yourself.

You can?t change unless you make a directed, continuous effort to do so. It is important to make any changes that are necessary for growth.

Determine the things that are vital to you, and be sure to focus on these things. By concentrating on those things that you cherish and appreciate, you?re less likely to be pessimistic and to brood over adverse situations that are of little consequence.

TIP! When putting effort into your personal development, assign a high value to that which is the best. Value your qualities and skills and learn to love yourself.

Pick up a book to find out more about self improvement. A good personal development book can give you great advice and ideas that can change your life. Try choosing a book that has several positive reviews because many books in the genre are not very well written.

Choose one aspect of yourself that needs improvement, and concentrate on that. There may be several aspects of your life that you want to improve, but if you limit your attention to one thing at a time, your chance for success improves. This also helps you maintain this change, as this new habit will be introduced gradually.

Your body?s health influences the well-being of your mind. Make sure you treat your body properly: follow a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Don?t forget that a healthy body helps ensure a healthy mind.

If personal development is an important goal in your life, be sure to feed your faith with love. Without love, you can?t have faith. You cannot consider your faith satisfactory if you do nothing to express it. Serve others when they need help, and commit yourself to doing things that demonstrate your love.

TIP! Know your strengths and set realistic goals that stretch them appropriately for growth rather than unrealistically for failure. Every person is an individual with different talents, and we are not all going to be good at everything.

True leaders are humble as they exercise their power. A leader guides people in the right direction but understands how to serve their employee?s needs. A good leader is virtuous and full of integrity, something you need in order to be successful.

Complex Carbohydrates

Eating more complex carbohydrates can actually help you deal with depression. If you do not have an adequate amount of complex carbohydrates in your diet, your serotonin can become depleted. You can increase your intake of these carbs by eating plenty of fresh fruits, raw vegetables, nuts, brown rice, whole grains and beans.

Be the best you can be at what you are doing! That passion of yours can put you on the road to success. We cannot be the best at everything we try, however, we can bring inspiration to others by giving everything the best effort. Try boosting your worth inside your field so that you can boost your self-esteem as well.

TIP! You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. These professionals are trained and experienced in helping you understand and manage the issues you have.

The sound advice in the above article will give you some important concepts to consider as you work to improve your attitude, character and lifestyle for the better. Using these tips will help you to create your own personal development goals, improve yourself and live a better life.

Do you want to create a full-time income with an business opportunity you can run from your very own home instead of going to a typical dead-end job? Moviehole.Net :: Movie, TV & Entertainment News | Film, DVD & Blu ...

Brooke here,

Has the success of James Bond flick ?Skyfall? cost fans of David Fincher?s ?Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? remake their sequel?

The Hollywood Reporter says though Sony and Fincher are interested in doing a follow-up to the 2011 film, based on the Swedish flick of the same name, star Daniel Craig?s rising price-tag coupled with the studio?s reluctance to lend the film a big-budget, has stalled the sequel indefinitely.

Off the back of his success with ?Skyfall?, Craig wants a big fee for the ?Tattoo? sequel. Sony aren?t biting.

The actor is interested in returning to the role, should Sony meet his demands.

If Craig and Sony don?t come to an agreement, his character ? journalist Mikael Blomkvist ? may be written out of the follow-up. This wouldn?t be hard considering the second film in the trilogy largely only concentrate?s on the Lisbeth Salander (played by Rooney Mara in Fincher?s first) anyway.

Steven Zaillian has turned in a ?production-ready? script for ?The Girl Who Played With Fire?, featuring the Blomkvist character, so obviously Sony would prefer Craig simply accept what they?re offering and do the movie so they don?t have to find more money and time to commission a rewrite.

?Everyone wants to make the next movies happen,? says an insider. ?There?s a great story to tell.?

The Truth Behind Today's Dismal U.S. Jobs Report

Friday, February 1st, 2013
By Michael Lombardi, MBA for Profit Confidential

Today?s Dismal U.S. Jobs ReportThe Bureau of Labor Statistics reported this morning that the U.S. economy created 157,000 jobs during January. The U.S. unemployment rate went up to 7.9% in January from 7.8% in December of 2012.

Now, this is very important and I want all my readers to know about it?

The Bureau reported that the underemployment rate (which includes people who have given up looking for work and people who want full-time jobs but who can only get part-time jobs) was at 14.4% in January?the same rate it was way back in November 2012 (seasonally adjusted). To me, this shows absolutely no improvement in the unemployment situation in this country!

And jobs created in the U.S. economy continue to be in the low-paying retail and service industries. Job growth in the low-paying sectors! In February of 2010, the unemployment rate for the wholesale and retail trade sector was 10%. By December of 2012, it declined to seven percent?that?s where the jobs are being created. (Source: Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, last accessed February 1, 2013.)

The jobs market in the U.S. economy is tormented. For the year of 2012, the average monthly jobs growth was 181,000. But, as most economists will tell you, the U.S. economy needs jobs growth of 250,000 per month for the economy to see any improvement. (Source: Reuters, February 1, 2013.)

It?s obvious there are still many troubled spots in the jobs market of the U.S. economy. If they are not fixed soon, they will drive the U.S. economy into further deterioration. It is startling to know that 38.1% of all those unemployed in the U.S. economy have been without work for 27 weeks or more.

If this goes on for much longer, the U.S. economy will go through another set of troubles. A couple of days ago we learned that the U.S. economy actually contracted in the fourth quarter of 2012 for the first time in three and half years. As I write below, consumer confidence is breaking down to 2011 levels! But let?s not fear; the stock market is rising (I?m being sarcastic, of course).

Michael?s Personal Notes:

Consumer confidence should be followed closely, as it gives investors an idea about consumer spending and where the U.S. economy might be heading. When consumer confidence rises, it means U.S. citizens feel good about spending. Consumer spending accounts for about 70% of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP).

Unfortunately, consumer confidence in the U.S. economy is plummeting?the last thing you want to see when you are looking for economic growth.

U.S. consumer confidence fell drastically in January. The Conference Board, which tracks the Consumer Confidence Index by conducting a monthly survey, reported that the index declined to a level of 58.6 in January from 66.7 in December of 2012?a drop of 12% over a one-month period. (Source: The Conference Board, January 29, 2013). The Consumer Confidence Index is at its lowest level since November of 2011!

Examining the report even further, it shows that 22.9% of the respondents to the survey expect their incomes to decline. That number was 19.1% in December. In addition, the number of people claiming that it?s difficult to get a job has increased to 37.7% from 36.1% in December.

This shouldn?t be a surprise to my Profit Confidential readers. Consumer confidence fell for the very reasons and concerns I have been writing about in these pages for months.

Since the financial crisis began, so-called economic growth in the U.S. economy has been insignificant at best. While some politicians (and even analysts) might continue to speak about jobs creation in the U.S. economy, the fact of the matter is that jobs growth is hardly keeping up with new people entering the workforce.

On top of the bleak employment picture, consumers are worried about their finances, as they simply don?t have a lot to spend. For example, from 2011 to 2012, weekly inflation-adjusted earnings for full-time wage and salary workers in the U.S. economy actually declined $1.00?from $336.00 in 2011 to $335.00 in 2012. (Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics, last accessed January 29, 2013.) One year later, things cost more, but are you making the same amount of money?

For economic growth to really happen in the U.S. economy, consumer confidence has to increase so consumer spending can rise. This just isn?t happening right now.

Where the Market Stands; Where it?s Headed:

It?s up, up and away for the stock market. This morning Exxon Mobile Corporation (NYSE/XOM) reported earnings above expectations and the U.S. jobs number report for January is being taken positively by investors. I have been waiting for the final speculative blow-off for the stock market rally that started in March of 2009?we?re living through it right now.

What He Said:

The year ?2000 was a turning point of consumer confidence in high tech stocks. 2006 will be remembered as the turning point of consumer confidence in the housing market. That means more for-sale signs going up, longer time periods to sell homes, bloated for-sale inventory and eventually lower prices for homes. But this time, the turnaround in consumer confidence will have a bigger impact on the economy. Hold onto your seats, this is going to be a nail biter.? Michael Lombardi in Profit Confidential, August 24, 2006. Michael started talking about and predicting the financial catastrophe we began experiencing in 2008 long before anyone else.

BlackBerry Z10 tipped to come only in black at launch, white edition to arrive February 15th

We've had a note in from a well-placed friend who says that RIM's BlackBerry Z10 will only debut in Henry Ford's favorite color: black. Those looking for a white-tinted fruity smartphone will apparently have to wait until February 15th before being able to splash their hard-earned. Either way, as we're but a few short minutes away from Thorsten Heins' big moment, we won't have long to wait for confirmation.
