Husband charged in Wis. officer's shooting death

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? An Iraq War veteran charged with ambushing his wife Christmas Eve as she worked as a Milwaukee-area police officer told investigators he shot her in the head repeatedly because he didn't want her to suffer before she died.

Benjamin Gabriel Sebena, 30, acknowledged to detectives that he was a jealous husband, police said. Still, they declined to speculate on a motive for the killing, saying Thursday their probe was ongoing.

Investigators said Ben Sebena told them he had been stalking his wife, Jennifer Sebena, for a few days. He said he waited a few hours near the fire department where officers often take breaks, and when he saw her squad car he rushed her and opened fire. They said when the officer reached for her weapon, her husband grabbed it from her holster and used it to shoot her three or four times in the face.

"Benjamin Sebena stated that he wanted to make sure she was dead so she wouldn't suffer," the criminal complaint said.

He was charged Thursday with first-degree intentional homicide in the death of Jennifer Sebena, who was also 30. During a brief court appearance, Ben Sebena was ordered held on $1 million cash bond. He wasn't required to enter a plea, and his attorney, Michael Steinle, didn't immediately respond to a phone message seeking comment.

Two hours after Jennifer Sebena was found dead, police monitored her husband on closed-circuit TV as he stood in an empty room at the police station. A detective heard Ben Sebena ask himself "How could I do that to her," after all the help she gave him, the criminal complaint said.

Officers went to check on Jennifer Sebena about 4:30 a.m. Monday after she didn't respond to radio calls. Sebena, who joined the Wauwatosa police force two years ago, was patrolling alone on the night she was killed.

"She was everything I could hope for in a young police officer: intelligent, energetic, willing to be of service and wanting to be a great police officer," Wauwatosa Chief Barry Weber said at a news conference.

Investigators said they found a number of details tying Ben Sebena to the killing. Surveillance video showed a vehicle that matches his in the area near the time of the shooting, and detectives who searched the couple's home found a gun in the attic that fires ammunition matching the bullet casings found at the scene. They also found Jennifer Sebena's service weapon hidden in the attic.

The investigation began when Ben Sebena called police Monday about 6:30 a.m. asking them to check on his wife's well-being. A police sergeant called him back five minutes later telling him to come to the station because his wife had been involved in an incident.

Ben Sebena didn't ask what happened, the complaint said. Later, when he was told at the station that his wife had been killed, he still didn't ask what happened to her.

During the interview, Ben Sebena "stated that he had been jealous of other men with regards to his wife," the complaint said.

Jennifer Sebena told a colleague earlier this month that her husband had acted violently toward her and put a gun to her head, prosecutors said.

The police chief said he wasn't aware of issues that would have been a cause for concern for Jennifer Sebena's safety. The state Justice Department is assisting in the investigation, and the director of the department's criminal investigation operations, Dave Spakowicz, said authorities are not speculating on what motivated the shooting.

Ben Sebena served two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Marine Corps. He was honorably discharged in 2005 after suffering severe arm and leg injuries in a mortar attack that year. The 10 medals or commendations he was awarded include a Purple Heart, a Good Conduct medal and a rifle-expert badge.

In a 10-minute video for his church made in 2010, Ben Sebena described his transformation from an angry teen into a decorated war veteran who rediscovered his faith in God.

"Before I went in I was pretty much a hippie. I was very laid back but the anger was there ? it was just very hidden," he said.

He said he joined the military because he felt unloved and unimportant and that even though the Marines helped him centralize the anger, the rage persisted when he returned to the U.S. He said he would ignore red lights and tear down the freeway on his motorcycle at 150 mph.

He also discussed his blossoming relationship with Jennifer, whom he knew from high school and with whom he exchanged emails during his recovery.

"Our love flourished. We became actually infatuated with each other," he said in the video for Elmbrook Church in nearby Brookfield. The church's pastor, Scott Arbeiter, confirmed to The Associated Press that it was Ben Sebena in the video.

Jennifer Sebena's funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Drink Recipe: Hibiscus Ginger Punch Recipes from The Kitchn | The ...

2012_12_20-hibiscus1.jpgMost punch recipes cater to a single crowd: drinkers or non-drinkers. This one is delicious either way. Whether you fizz it up with champagne or mineral water, hibiscus ginger punch will put a colorful sparkle in your celebrations.

2012_12_20-hibiscus2.jpg

When I started dreaming of a festive punch, I initially considered cranberry or pomegranate but, frankly, I was a bit tired of these ingredients, which appear in every other beverage this time of year. Instead, I turned to a holiday tradition from Jamaica, where a drink called "sorrel" is made from hibiscus blossoms. Throughout the world, dried hibiscus or roselle is steeped in water to make crimson-colored tisanes, juices, and punches, and in Jamaica especially the hibiscus is combined with ginger for a tart and pleasantly spicy beverage.

To make this punch, I mixed a rich hibiscus and ginger base with ginger ale and then either champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water. For the non-alcoholic version I recommend using a true mineral water (like Perrier) rather than other carbonated waters. Its subtle mineral flavor and more delicate bubbles are a sophisticated substitute for the alcohol. But use any fizzy water that works for you.

On the subject of substitutions, what if you can't find dried hibiscus blossoms (also known as "flor de jamaica" in Latin American markets)? Try making a strong brew with hibiscus tea bags; Celestial Seasonings and The Republic of Tea are two widely available brands.

Hibiscus Ginger Punch

Serves about 12

4 1/2 cups water
1 cup dried hibiscus blossoms
2-inch piece of ginger, thinly sliced
1 cup sugar
4 cups chilled ginger ale
2 750-mL bottles chilled champagne, sparkling white wine, or sparkling mineral water
Optional: ice, garnishes of mint, lemon or lime slices

Combine water, hibiscus blossoms, and ginger in a pot. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 20 minutes. Turn off heat and stir in sugar. Let cool, strain, and chill. (If you like, save some of the plumped-up hibiscus blossoms for garnish.)

To make punch, stir hibiscus juice with ginger ale and champagne or mineral water. Garnish if desired and serve immediately.

Hashtags, Latt?s, and the Power of PR | Business 2 Community

Starbucks, the international brewer of overpriced venti cappuccinos, recently launched a Twitter hashtag campaign entitled, ?#SpreadTheCheer.?

The idea was that users would jump on the hashtag to spread good will and holiday spirit, all while promoting the Starbucks brand. A seemingly harmless plan, users set out in droves to use the hashtag.

Unfortunately for Starbucks, they were also making news on another plain. According toBranding Magazine, which was citing research from Reuters, ?the company devised a legal way of making fake losses through royalty payments for use of the brand and other global fees, and that way the company cut income tax. Starbucks UK has paid less then 1% in corporation tax over 14 years. Now they have to pay an amount of ?$20 million in taxes in two years.?

Ouch. This news, coinciding with a hashtag campaign about spreading cheer, proved to be a PR nightmare for Starbucks.

And it gets worse. At the Natural History Museum in London, where Starbucks sponsors the ice rink on the premises, there was a large screen displaying all of the Tweets containing that hashtag?as they came in.?140-character bundles of venom, profanity and all, were displayed for all to see.

Additionally,?it was revealed earlier this month?that Starbucks would be cutting employee benefits ? including maternity leave, paid lunch breaks and sick leave. This revelation only fueled the fire of an already angry Twitterverse.

If your business is ever running a hashtag campaign, let the plight of Starbucks be a cautionary tale. We had planned on embedding some of the Tweets in this blog, but, frankly, this is a family-friendly site.

If you run a Twitter hashtag campaign, there are three crucial things to remember.

1. Hashtags don?t go away if the conversation isn?t over.

As recently as one hour prior to this blog being written, there were still Tweets wishing ill-will towards Starbucks, and this hashtag was launched well over a week ago.

2. Social media are the front lines of public relations.

Public sentiment is more accessible than ever, and no one will hold back. Starbucks was caught in a hurricane of profanity and ugly customer interaction. That?s what happens when you cut wages and benefits. Even the most savvy and proficient PR directors are helpless in a violent social media avalanche.

3. Even Santa can?t salvage a brand image.

Starbucks was banking on the spirit and cheer of the holidays to inspire its audience. We live in an age of disdain towards corporations. If shady practices are brought to light, particularly on a stage as large as the one Starbucks lives on, that will take precedent. People are always more likely to act when they are furious. Starbucks learned that the hard way.

Colleges help students put best Web foot forward

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Samantha Grossman wasn't always thrilled with the impression that emerged when people Googled her name.

"It wasn't anything too horrible," she said. "I just have a common name. There would be pictures, college partying pictures, that weren't of me, things I wouldn't want associated with me."

So before she graduated from Syracuse University last spring, the school provided her with an online tool that allowed her to put her best Web foot forward. Now when people Google her, they go straight to a positive image ? professional photo, cum laude degree and credentials ? that she credits with helping her land a digital advertising job in New York.

"I wanted to make sure people would find the actual me and not these other people," she said.

Syracuse, Rochester, and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore are among the universities that offer such online tools to their students free of charge, realizing ill-considered Web profiles of drunken frat parties, prank videos and worse can doom graduates to a lifetime of unemployment ? even if the pages are somebody else's with the same name.

It's a growing trend based on studies showing that most employers Google prospective hires and nearly all of them won't bother to go past the first page of results. The online tools don't eliminate the embarrassing material, they just put the graduate's most flattering, professional profile front and center.

"These students have been comfortable with the intimate details of their lives on display since birth," said Lisa Severy, president-elect of the National Career Development Association and director of career services at the University of Colorado-Boulder, which does not offer the service.

"The first item on our 'five things to do before you graduate' list is 'clean up your online profile,'" she said. "We call it the grandma test ? if you don't want her to see it, you probably don't want an employer to, either."

After initially supplying BrandYourself accounts to graduating seniors, Syracuse University this year struck a deal with the company ? begun by a trio of alumni ? to offer accounts to all of its undergraduate and graduate students and alumni at no additional charge. About 25,000 people have access to it so far.

"It's becoming more and more important for students to be aware of and able to manage their online presence, to be able to have strong, positive things come up on the Internet when someone seeks them out," said Mike Cahill, Syracuse's career services director.

Online reputation repair companies have been around for at least a couple of years, often charging hundreds or thousands of dollars a year to arrange for good results on search engine result pages. BrandYourself, which normally charges $10 a month for an account, launched two years ago as a less expensive, do-it-yourself alternative after co-founder Pete Kistler ran into a problem with his own name.

"He couldn't get an internship because he was getting mistaken for a drug dealer with the same name," said co-founder Patrick Ambron. "He couldn't even get calls back and found out that was the problem."

An April survey of 2,000 hiring managers from CareerBuilder found nearly two in five companies use social networking sites to research job candidates and 11 percent said they planned to start. A third of the hiring managers who said they research candidates reported finding something like a provocative photo or evidence of drinking or drug use that cost the candidate a job.

"We want our students and alumni actively involved in shaping their online presence," said Johns Hopkins Career Center Director Mark Presnell. Students are encouraged to promote positive, professional content that's easily found by employers, he said.

BrandYourself works by analyzing search terms in a user's online profile to determine, for example, that a LinkedIn account might rank 25th on Google searches of the user's name. The program then suggests ways to boost that ranking. The software also provides alerts when an unidentified result appears on a user's first page or if any links rise or fall significantly in rank.

Nati Katz, a public relations strategist, views his presence online as a kind of virtual storefront that he began carefully tending while in graduate school at Syracuse.

Google his name and up pops his LinkedIn page with a listing of the jobs he's held in digital media and the "500+ connections" badge of honor. His Facebook account is adorned with Katz smiling over an elegant Thanksgiving dinner table. There are a couple of professional profiles and his Tumblr link, one after another on the first page of results and all highlighting his professional experience.

Before his 2011 graduation, he took the university up on its offer of the BrandYourself account and said it gave him a leg up with potential employers and internship supervisors.

"Fortunately, I didn't have to deal with anything negative under my profile," said Katz, who used the reputation website BrandYourself.com while pursuing dual degrees in public relations and international affairs. "What I was trying to form was really a nice, clean, neat page, very professional."

Why Should We Drink Decaffeinated Coffee? - Food Recipes Guide

We all know that the beverage business is truly a money generating enterprise. As such, there are thousands of advertising companies competing to be the one to ply the manufacturers' wares. Of course, coffee is one of these significant beverages and just like bottled water, sodas and teas, they're all marketed around at least one major ingredient; caffeine.

Yet typically, when dealing in the non-caffeine segment of the marketplace, a consumer might notice that you will find numerous terms which are used to describe the drink including caffeine free, naturally decaffeinated and just plain decaffeinated.

Usually, a beverage is regarded as caffeine free only if it never contained caffeine from the start. Of course, this would rule out the tea leaves and coffee beans because they each have caffeine content in their unprocessed, natural form.

In fact, there is a specific amount of caffeine which is contained naturally in a variety of coffees and teas, so in case you genuinely want your cup of coffee or tea to be non-caffeinated, then pay attention to the natural amount of caffeine that is in the product after which find out how the remainder of the caffeine is eliminated from a particular sort or brand.

Even in this day of modern day technology there is no way that any method can completely eliminate all caffeine content from the product. In the United States there's no "law" about removing caffeine but the standard indicates a beverage might be sold as decaffeinated if 97% of it is removed.

In Europe, they have a higher standard that indicates it can be termed decaffeinated if 99% of the caffeine is removed. You'll find certain things that have an effect on the content of caffeine which are really out of the manufacturers control and that includes the steeping times and methods of brewing, which both drastically influence the amount of caffeine that you end up consuming.

If you were to do an online search about how the decaffeinated process work, then you may find some fascinating things, for example conflicting, distinct, misleading or just plain confusing outcomes.

One cause for this is simply because of the amount of money that buyers spend on these beverages. It is so much that manufacturers do not want to take any chances of losing that revenue.

Nonhuman Personhood Rights (and Wrongs)

"American Chimp" by Nathaniel Gold

???????????????"American Chimp" by Nathaniel Gold

Americans take their rights seriously. But there is a lot of misunderstanding about what actually constitutes a ?right.? Religious believers are correct that they have a right to freely express their beliefs. This right is protected under the First Amendment to the US Constitution that prohibits Congress from making any ?law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.? However, as a result, devout believers feel it is a violation of their rights when intelligent design creationism is forbidden in the classroom or when prayer during school sporting events is banned. After all, shouldn?t the First Amendment prohibit the government from interfering with this basic right?

The answer is no and represents an important distinction when understanding what a right actually is. Because public schools are government-run institutions, allowing prayer during school activities or promoting religious doctrines in the classroom is a direct violation of the First Amendment. These activities infringe on the rights of those who do not share the same religious beliefs (or any at all). The key point is that rights are obligations that require governments to act in certain ways and refrain from acting in others. The First Amendment obligates the government to protect the rights of all citizens from an establishment of religion. You may have the right to freely exercise your beliefs, but that doesn?t give you the right to impose your views on others in public school.

It was just this understanding of rights as obligations that governments must obey that formed the basis for a declaration of rights for cetaceans (whales and dolphins) at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science held in Vancouver, Canada last month. Such a declaration is a minefield ripe for misunderstanding, as the BBC quickly demonstrated with their headline, ?Dolphins deserve same rights as humans, say scientists.? However, according to Thomas I. White, Conrad N. Hilton Chair of Business Ethics at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, the idea of granting personhood rights to nonhumans would not make them equal to humans. They would not vote, sit on a jury, or attend public school. However, by legally making whales and dolphins ?nonhuman persons,? with individual rights under law, it would obligate governments to protect cetaceans from slaughter or abuse.

?The evidence for cognitive and affective sophistication?currently most strongly documented in dolphins?supports the claim that these cetaceans are ?non-human persons,?? said White. As a result, cetaceans should be seen as ?beyond use? by humans and have ?moral standing? as individuals. ?It is, therefore, ethically indefensible to kill, injure or keep these beings captive for human purposes,? he said.

This is not as radical an idea as it may sound. The law is fully capable of making and unmaking ?persons? in the strictly legal sense. For example, one Supreme Court case in 1894 (Lockwood, Ex Parte 154 U.S. 116) decided that it was up to the states ?to determine whether the word ?person? as therein used [in the statute] is confined to males, and whether women are admitted to practice law in that commonwealth.? As atrocious as this ruling sounds, such a precedent continued well into the twentieth century and, in 1931, a Massachusetts judge ruled that women could be denied eligibility to jury status because the word ?person? was a term that could be interpreted by the court.

Such a flexible interpretation of personhood was demonstrated most dramatically in 1886 when the Supreme Court granted personhood status to the first nonhuman. In this case it was a corporation and Southern Pacific Railroad (part of robber baron Leland Stanford?s empire) snuck in through a legal loophole to gain full personhood rights under the 14th Amendment. Such rights have now been extended to all corporations under the Citizens United ruling in 2010, which is what allowed Mitt Romney to confidently declare ?corporations are people, my friends.?

But prior to 1886, dating back to the 1600s, corporations were viewed as ?artificial persons,? a legal turn of phrase that offered certain rights to the companies but without the full rights of citizens. By using the wording of the 14th Amendment (intended to protect former slaves from a state government seeking to ?deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law?) it was ruled that corporations should enjoy the same status. As a result, between 1890 and 1920, out of all the 14th Amendment cases that came before the Supreme Court, 19 dealt with African-Americans while 288 dealt with corporations. With the legal stroke of a pen, artificial persons were granted all the protections of citizens.

But that would be unlikely to happen with whales, dolphins, or even great apes. A ?nonhuman person? would have a definition similar to this earlier tradition of ?artificial person,? one that grants limited rights that a government is obligated to protect. Furthermore, according to White, the term would only apply under very specific criteria for nonhumans that had self-awareness, complex social as well as emotional lives, and evidence of conscious awareness (so, for example, ants would never be considered persons under law). According to White, these criteria have been met in the case of dolphins and whales and our legal institutions should incorporate this evidence into American jurisprudence.

?One of the most important aspects of science is that scientific progress regularly raises important ethical questions,? said White. ?As scientific research produces a more accurate picture of the universe, it often reveals ways that human attitudes and behavior may be out of synch with these new facts.?

This has already been established in some parts of the world. In 2008 the Spanish Parliament came to a similar conclusion for great apes that would grant limited personhood rights to nonhuman animals for the first time so that, according to The Guardian newspaper, they ?should enjoy the right to life, freedom and not to be tortured.? This ruling came one year after Austrian animal rights advocates had attempted, and failed, to adopt the chimpanzee Hiasl so that he couldn?t be sold to a zoo or laboratory. The judge in that case decided that chimpanzees were defined as property and therefore couldn?t be adopted (something that the law allows only for ?persons?). However, as the history of this term suggests, there is nothing inherent to modern legal frameworks that would prevent a different judge from coming to another conclusion.

"Anonymous" hurt by arrests but hard to kill

LONDON | Thu Mar 8, 2012 11:23am EST

LONDON (Reuters) - In turning one of its best-known hackers into an informant and breaking open the highest profile elements of the "Anonymous" movement, authorities have dealt a serious blow to a group they found a growing irritant.

But as the broader "Anonymous" label - complete with its iconic Guy Fawkes mask imagery - is used by ever more disparate causes worldwide, it may be all but impossible to shut it down for good.

U.S. authorities revealed on Wednesday that leading Anonymous hacker "Sabu" - real name Hector Xavier Monsegur, aged 28 - had been arrested last June in his apartment in a Manhattan housing complex.

According to a newly released court transcript, he agreed to cooperate with authorities in return for likely leniency - helping U.S. prosecutors bring charges against five more men, including two in Britain and two in Ireland. All had also been previously arrested.

"Sabu was seen as a leader," said Mikko Hypponen, chief research officer of Finnish security firm f-secure. "Just yesterday people were looking up to him... it's a very serious blow. It's probably not going to be the end of Anonymous but it's going to take a while for them to recover, particularly from the paranoia."

All six were said to be senior members of LulzSec, an offshoot of Anonymous that took credit for a range of hacking attacks on government and private sector websites. Targets included the CIA, Britain's Serious Organized Crime Agency, Japan's Sony Corp and a host of others including in Ireland and Mexico.

Taking inspiration from the hacking and Internet community as well as popular culture - particularly the 2005 film "V for Vendetta" in which a masked hero fights a dystopian government - Anonymous emerged in the middle of the last decade.

Initially focused on fighting attempts at Internet regulation and blocking free illegal downloads, it has since taken on a range of other targets including Scientology and the global banking system. Governments have been a growing target, both Western and in more autocratic states such as China and Iran. Websites have been attacked and occasionally shut down.

But Anonymous - and LulzSec in particular - leapt to much greater prominence in late 2010 when they launched what they described as the "first cyber war" in retaliation for attempts to shut down the Wikileaks website.

They attacked websites such as MasterCard that tried to block payments to Wikileaks after apparent pressure from the US government following the release of thousands of diplomatic cables.

"NO HONOUR AMONG THIEVES"?

"This is probably the end of this particular group," said Tim Hardy, a British activist and computer scientist who runs the blog "Beyond Clicktivism. " But... part of the point of Anonymous is that it's a group that anyone can say they are part of, whether they are attacking a website or wearing a mask outside the Church of Scientology."

Those masks became an increasingly frequent sight on Western streets in 2011, increasingly adopted by more radical, libertarian and sometimes anarchist elements of European and U.S. protest groups.

They became a frequent sight at demonstrations such as "Occupy Wall Street" and its spin-offs elsewhere in the U.S. and Britain. They were also heavily used by the "indignados" anti-austerity protesters in Spain, where fancy dress shops ran out of stock and had to import them from abroad.

Such popular usage will likely continue, but the loss of some of the movement's highest profile stars and technical experts will still hurt.

Web forums frequented by Anonymous were frothing with abuse and anger following the arrests on Tuesday. "Sabu" had been occasionally suspected of being a mole, but had continued to operate as an effective leader advising other hackers on the importance of maintaining anonymity and security.

"No honor among thieves," said Tony Dyhouse, a computer security expert at UK defense firm QinetiQ who has long studied hackers. "Any further (Anonymous) actions are likely to be much more low-key. Fear is in the ranks. However, there will be many that see some of the casualties as martyrs and empty footprints to be filled."

Computer security experts say the hackers of LulzSec appeared much more technically adept than had been usual for Anonymous, which has often relied on simple - if illegal - software that can be downloaded by any potential hacker regardless of their technical skills.

"FEATHER IN CAP FOR FEDS"

While many of its attacks - often direct denial of service (DDOS) attacks designed to overload websites - were relatively simple, LulzSec penetrated secure commercial systems to steal highly sensitive information.

These included credit card details of users of Sony's latest PlayStation platform as well as client details and some 5 million e-mails from U.S. specialist geopolitical publisher and sometime private intelligence firm Stratfor. The Stratfor e-mails were then passed on to Wikileaks, which is now publishing them.

U.S. authorities said one of those arrested this week, Jeremy Hammond - a Chicago resident who styled himself "Anarchaos" - had been charged with the Stratfor hack. Another of those arrested, 19-year-old Donncha O' Cearrbhail, was charged with another recent high profile success - the hacking of a conference call between the FBI and London detectives discussing action against hackers.

"Undoubtedly this is a big feather in the cap for the Feds," said QinetiQ's Dyhouse. "But the Scotland Yard/FBI leak shows how simple mistakes can have a huge impact on any operation. Interceptions can be so easy these days."

Ultimately, Anonymous and LulzSec in particular may have been the victims of their own success and over ambition. Whatever the technical mistakes and personal weaknesses that led to their undoing, security experts say their fate was sealed once they became so high profile that authorities made them a priority.

The success of Anonymous in the last two years may also have itself driven greater emphasis on computer security and fuelled demands for regulation - the opposite of their intent.

Even for a global activist community infused with new energy and political significance in the aftermath of the financial crisis, Anonymous remains controversial and divisive.

While some members may be admired for their actions and beliefs - albeit often varied and extreme - others are seen as simply in it for the "lulz", the plural of the Internet abbreviation LOL for "laugh out loud".

"There are those who see them as banner carriers for the revolutionary left," says Beyond Clicktivism's Hardy. "But there are also those who see them just as consumerists who don't want to pay (for)... music and videos."

Dad-son talk, celebrity tweets key to viral video

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) ? The young American boy sums up what his father does for a living: "You stop the bad guys from being mean." Yes, the father says, but who are the bad guys? The child thinks, then offers a guess: "Star Wars people?"

Though half a world away from this preschooler's American upbringing, the truth is far more sinister.

The bad guys are Joseph Kony and his Lord's Resistance Army, a brutal Central Africa militia that has kidnapped thousands of children and forced them to become sex slaves, fight as child soldiers and kill family members during a 26-year campaign of terror.

The father-son conversation is part of a 30-minute video that has rocketed through cyberspace since its release Monday on YouTube. It had been viewed more than 40 million times by late Thursday, propelled by celebrity tweets and fans on Facebook and Twitter, especially teens and young adults.

The video's premise is that people here in America ? and the world beyond ? have the power to stop Kony, if only they are willing to spread the word through the power of social media. Called Kony 2012, the goal is to see Kony captured by the end of this year.

The father, Jason Russell, is the co-founder of Invisible Children, an anti-LRA advocacy group, and the film's director. At one point in the film, he asks his son, Gavin, what he thinks should be done about Kony.

"Stop him," Gavin responds.

Then, in one of the video's many slick moments, the boy's words are quickly echoed by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, where Kony is wanted for crimes against humanity.

"Stop him," Luis Moreno-Ocampo says on camera, "and (that will) solve all the problems."

Despite an International Criminal Court arrest warrant and the deployment last fall of 100 U.S. Special Forces to four Central African countries to help advise in the fight against Kony, until now, few Americans knew who he was.

To those 99 percent, Russell poses this challenge: Make Kony and his crimes so "famous" that governments view it as imperative that the mission to capture him succeeds.

Celebrities ? and teens ? have quickly joined the cause. Data collected by YouTube show the video is most popular with boys and girls ages 13 to 17, as well as men ages 18 to 24.

"Even if its 10 minutes ... Trust me, you NEED to know about this!" tweeted Rhianna.

"This is not a joke. This serious. TOGETHER we can (hash)MakeAChange and (hash)STOPKRONY -- help another kid in need!" Justin Bieber tweeted.

"Have supported with $'s and voice and will not stop," tweeted Oprah.

Invisible Children's critics say the San Diego-based group oversimplifies a complex issue. In a rebuttal posted on its website, the group acknowledges the video overlooks many nuances but says it sought to explain the 26-year-old conflict "in an easily understandable format." It called the film a "first entry point."

"It's something we can all agree on regardless of your political background," said Ben Keesey, the group's 28-year-old chief executive officer. "The core message is just to show that there are few times where problems are black and white. There's lots of complicated stuff in the world, but Joseph Kony and what he's doing is black and white."

Kony and the LRA began their attacks in Uganda in the 1980s, when Kony sought to overthrow the government. Since being pushed out of Uganda several years ago, the militia has terrorized villages in Congo, the Central Africa Republic and South Sudan.

"Kony is a monster. He deserves to be prosecuted and hanged," Col. Felix Kulayigye, spokesman for Uganda's military, told The Associated Press.

Because of the intensified hunt for Kony, LRA forces ? once thousands strong ? have diminished in number, splitting into smaller groups that can travel the jungle more easily. Experts estimate the militia now has about 250 fighters.

Attacks continue, with victims mutilated by machetes, their faces slashed into grotesque shapes. Women are raped and killed. Young girls are forced into sexual slavery.

Jolly Okot was abducted in 1986. The then-18-year-old could speak English, so she was valuable to the militants, who also forced her into sex slavery.

Today, Okot is the Uganda country director for Invisible Children. She said the group is helping 800 people affected by LRA violence to attend high school and college. The program has given hope to kids who previously dropped out of school.

"The most exciting thing about this film is that I'm so grateful that the world has been able to pay attention to an issue that has long been neglected," she said in an interview. "I think it is an eye-opener and I think this will push for Joseph Kony to be apprehended, and I think justice will get to him."

Moreno-Ocampo said it has been hard to raise public awareness about Kony since issuing the arrest warrant against him in 2005.

"Kony is difficult. He is not killing people in Paris or in New York. Kony is killing people in Central African Republic, no one cares about him," Moreno-Ocampo told the AP. "These young people from California mobilizing this effort is incredible, exactly what we need."

Still, the burst of attention has brought scrutiny, including over the ratio of Invisible Children's spending on direct aid and its rating by the site Charity Navigator, as well as criticism of a 2008 photo of three members holding guns alongside troops in what is now South Sudan.

In a response posted on the Internet, the group said it spends about 80 percent of its funds on programs that further its mission, 16 percent on administration and about 3 percent on fundraising. The group said its accountability score is low because it has only four independent voting members on its board of directors, but is seeking a fifth.

Last year, Invisible Children began installing high frequency radios in Africa's remotest jungle to help track militia attacks. People in areas without phones can report attacks on the radios to people who put them on a website called the LRA Crisis Tracker.

The group's website www.kony2012.com prominently displays the faces of 20 disparate celebrities ? from Warren Buffett and Bill O'Reilly to Tim Tebow and Stephen Colbert ? asking viewers to click on them to send a message urging support. It also shows 12 politicians from across the ideological spectrum.

In the video, Russell tells of meeting a Ugandan boy named Jacob who watched LRA fighters kill his brother. The American promises the African child he will do whatever he can to help. Nearly a decade later, Jacob is part of Invisible Children's campaign to bring awareness of the atrocities to college campuses in America and beyond.

The film opens with Gavin's birth, and Russell's philosophy that in today's interconnected world, "where you live should not determine whether you live." If Gavin, born in American, can have a happy upbringing, Jacob should too.

"At the end of my life I want to say that the world we left behind is one Gavin can be proud of, one that doesn't allow Joseph Konys and child soldiers," Russell says. "A place where children no matter where they live, have a childhood free from fear."

Gavin shakes his blond hair and says: "I'm going to be like you dad. I'm going to come with you to Africa."

When Drugs Fail, Surgery May Get Epilepsy Under Control

TUESDAY, March 6 (HealthDay News) -- Uncontrollable temporal lobe epilepsy affected almost every major aspect of John Keener's life.

Despite trying medication after medication, Keener had to give up driving after he had a serious accident while having a seizure. Because he couldn't drive, he had to drop out of college. Dating seemed an insurmountable challenge because Keener never knew when he might have a seizure.

But in 2006 his "life completely changed" when he underwent surgery for his epilepsy.

"Surgery made a huge difference in my life," said Keener, of Camarillo, Calif. Once he got his license back, he was able to start his own business, and he and his girlfriend, Christine Smith, are celebrating their one-year anniversary.

"Epilepsy is a serious condition and in approximately one-third of patients it won't be controlled by their medications," explained Dr. Jerome Engel Jr., director of the Seizure Disorder Center at the University of California, Los Angeles. "The longer someone waits for surgery when medications aren't working, the less the chance you can help them live a normal life. But, for people with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, there's about an 80 percent chance of becoming seizure-free after surgery."

Engel is the lead author of a study in the March 7 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association that compared continued medical treatment to surgery in people with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy that wasn't helped by antiepileptic medications.

Epilepsy is a disorder that causes abnormal electrical impulses in certain areas of the brain, according to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS). These abnormal electrical impulses may trigger a convulsive seizure, also known as a grand mal seizure. But, they can also cause other kinds of seizures, called focal seizures or complex partial seizures, that aren't as easy to recognize.

For example, Keener didn't have the convulsive type of seizures. Instead, he said, he just kind of "vanished for a moment." But, while he wasn't aware of what he was doing when he was having a seizure, he would sometimes still be talking.

NINDS describes this type of seizure as one that alters your state of consciousness. People may begin doing something repetitive, like walking in a circle, or they may continue doing whatever activity they were doing, but they won't have a memory of it. These types of seizures last only a few seconds. This form of epilepsy is often referred to by the area of the brain that's affected. In Engel's study, people with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy were studied.

Many people are helped by antiepileptic medications, but for some, drugs bring no relief. The American Academy of Neurology recommends considering surgery if two different antiepileptic medication regimens don't control seizures. But, in many cases, this isn't happening, and Engel said that the delay in surgery after medication has failed to control seizures can lead to severely diminished quality of life, accidents caused by seizures and even sudden unexplained death.

He said that, on average, people who are referred for surgery have had epilepsy for 22 years. And, he noted, that's often too long to wait. "Early surgery is essential to avoiding consequences of epilepsy," Engel stressed.

In the new study, 38 people who had been diagnosed with mesial temporal lobe epilepsy for an average of five years were randomly assigned to receive medication or surgery. All of the study volunteers had tried at least two brand-name antiepileptic medications that failed to control their seizures. People treated with medications were offered the option of surgery when the trial was completed. Keener was in the medication group during the study period, and opted for surgery when the trial was over.

Surgery for this type of epilepsy involves identifying the area of the brain that is sending abnormal electrical signals and removing that small area, according to Engel.

At the end of two years, no one in the medication group was seizure-free, but 85 percent of those who'd undergone surgery remained seizure-free. Those who'd had surgery also reported a better quality of life than those in the medication group. Also over the two years, those who could drive a car in the surgical group went from 7 percent to 80 percent.

The most significant side effect from surgery was a decline in memory. However, according to NINDS, uncontrolled epilepsy can also cause memory difficulties. The study authors also noted that three people in the medication group had severe, uncontrolled seizures (status epilepticus).

The study was stopped early because the researchers had difficulty recruiting a sufficient number of patients to participate.

Dr. Ashesh Mehta, director of epilepsy surgery at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Institute in Manhasset, N.Y., said he wasn't surprised the researchers had difficulty getting patients to agree to take part in a study that randomly assigns treatments. He noted that most people know whether they want to continue with medications or have surgery, and they might not want to take the chance of being put into a treatment group they're not interested in.

Mehta said he wasn't surprised by the study findings, either. "Correctly selected patients will generally have a much better outcome with surgery. Seizure freedom is one of the most important things to aim for, but there are so many people whose lives are limited by seizures. The earlier you get surgery, the less you may have to give up," said Mehta.

Both Mehta and Engel suggested that people who have tried two or more antiepileptic medications and still have seizures that interfere with work, school or interpersonal relationships should seek treatment at an epilepsy center.

Travelers Drops Workers' Comp Insurance for Pennsylvania Town ...

Travelers Group will not be renewing their workers? compensation policy with the borough of Nazareth, Pa. when it expires June 1 because of excessive claims. The town has had claims totaling approximately $1.1 million from 2009 to 2012.

Nazareth Mayor Fred Daugherty said 98% of the workers? comp claims during that time period came from police department personnel. But the city already had a history of too many claims, according to the mayor.

?Travelers was the only company that would provide us a workers? compensation policy,? he said. ?Our only option now is to go to the state fund, and we can?t even get a figure on that yet.? A spokesperson for Travelers declined to comment.

The mayor did not elaborate on what drove the spike in workers? comp claims.

Daugherty said he wants to put together a regional police force, using officers from his city and other nearby communities to regroup and reorganize the department to improve the management to the point where they can work their way out of their current predicament. ?This situation of excessive claims can be corrected and we can eventually get off the state fund,? he said. ?But we will have to go three years with virtually no claims. And that is a very difficult if not impossible feat to do.?

The town is not the only one in this predicament regarding workers? compensation. ?There are other towns all over that are in the same boat as us,? he said.

In October, A.M. Best released a special report on the workers? compensation market, saying it believed the line?s underwriting performance will continue to weaken before it improves because the number the factors that led to the deterioration in recent years ? including competitive pricing, rate decreases, high unemployment, decreased payrolls, rising medical costs and claims severity steadily trending upward ? all are expected to continue over the medium term (BestWeek, Oct. 10, 2011).

Travelers Group is one of the largest property casualty companies in the country, with more than 30,000 employees, 13,000 independent agents and 22 product lines across the personal, business, financial and international insurance segments. It currently has a Best?s Financial Strength Rating of A+ (Superior).

The top five insurance companies providing workers? compensation in Pennsylvania according to BestLink are Liberty Mutual Insurance, with a market share of 8.83%; State Workers? Insurance Fund, with 7.41%; American International Group, with 7.02%; Old Republic Insurance Group, with 6.19%; and Zurich Financial Services NA Group, with 5.97%.

That is Your Commercial Loan Broker?

What can your current commercial loan broker do for you personally? That all depends on which broker you decide to do business with. As is the situation for most items in life, there is a number of financial institutions available. However, not all brokers can provide the same possibilities, variations on financial loans, and services. Each commercial loan broker will offer you similar products and services, but no a pair of will offer the exact same set of products and services. Thus it is vital to analyze the advantages and drawbacks of potential professional loan brokers prior to choosing one.

Things to Look at

1. What will your broker finance? ? Many brokers concentrate on only financing certain varieties of opportunities and assets. For instance, you might end up being especially interested in investing in an earnings property, so you will need a commercial property loan. The commercial loan broker you are interested in should fit your requirements and hopefully be prepared to finance a number of different income properties. Perhaps you need to develop a different portfolio of earnings properties by investing in a range of apartments, hotels, office buildings, health care facilities, and industrial areas. To realize this strategy you simply must find a professional loan broker prepared to extend a professional property loan these various income properties.

Some brokers might limit the setting of properties they are prepared to finance so that you can limit their risk or contact with that sector of the housing market. Remember, financial institutions are in the commercial of making money like everyone else. If they feel the reward of the loan won?t justify the risk, they will not really be very interested in financing the venture. Odds are you will discover financing elsewhere, but for ease and efficiency you should limit your relationship to a few commercial loan broker agents.Small Business Loans in Alabama

2. Are the Rates Competitive? ? You can?t blindly work with a commercial loan broker simply because they offer a fantastic commercial property loan along because of the other products and services you might need. One of your driving factors regarding successful businesses is actually minimizing costs. A commercial loan isn?t free, and thus the price of the loan must be analyzed. The cost in the loan obviously includes the interest rate you?ll have to pay on the total amount of the mortgage loan. This is a true cost, and should be compared to the rates other rivals offer. Business Loans in Maryland

Once you have compared rates, don?t think you happen to be done analyzing expenses. Financial institutions always charge a number of cleverly named and sometimes disguised charges on commercial financial loans. Find out what sort of fees your professional loan broker is actually charging and compare those with their competitors. At the minimum, you can keep the commercial loan specialist honest by monitoring the fees charged.

3. Don?t Forget in regards to the Intangibles. ? Products, services, and rates are common things you should think about when selecting a commercial loan specialist. But do not undervalue the type of relationship a broker is prepared to commit to. Some commercial mortgage loan brokers are completely hands off, and will offer minimum assistance beyond arranging your loans. Others provide additional personal assistance to be practical, even serving as sort of unofficial consultant for your business. Odds are you want a commercial loan broker that?s willing to build a real relationship along and your company. The experience and business knowledge they provide to your business is often worth greater slightly better rate of interest. Selecting a professional loan broker that?s committed to discovering you succeed will go a considerable ways in helping you understand success.

Ask Amy | Nashville City Paper

Thursday, March 1, 2012 at 9:05pm

DEAR AMY: My spouse developed a telephone addiction for a childhood friend. This relationship has been going on for several years but my husband has never mentioned it to me.

I learned of this by accident from a friend of the family. When I approached him, he downplayed it as minimal casual contact. Later, he admitted he had a special connection with her and said that they are in touch often. He also says they are "just friends" and refuses to cut ties with her and her family.

If they are "just friends," I cannot understand the total secrecy of this relationship (her husband was equally clueless). I am having a difficult time with this. It is as if they had conducted an intimate physical affair. The emotional distress has been devastating to me psychologically and it has devastated our marriage.

I am made out to be the villain by my husband and the other woman for demanding an end to it. I have been a faithful wife and do not know how to deal with this.

What should I do?

? Devastated Wife

DEAR DEVASTATED: Judging from the contents of my inbox, emotional affairs are the new infidelity.

I don't want to make it seem like these nonsexual affairs are some sort of fad-of-the-heart. They are very real, tangible and painful ? as your story illustrates.

Marriage is like a house built by two people; the house's function is to contain the intimate relationship.

Your husband has opened a window onto this other relationship without your knowledge or consent.

I borrow the "open window" metaphor from the important book on this subject, "Not 'Just Friends':?Rebuilding Trust?and Recovering Your Sanity After Infidelity," by?Shirley P. Glass?and?Jean Coppock Staeheli (2004,?Free Press). The authors' research on infidelity shows that for many people, emotional infidelity is actually far worse than a sexual affair.

You and your husband can mediate your way through this with the help of a marriage counselor. I agree that if he continues to maintain this secret and exclusive relationship it will seriously impair, if not destroy, your marriage.

DEAR AMY: I recently posted my profile on a few dating sites.

I'm 18 years old and would love to meet a nice guy. A day after I posted my profile I connected with a "match." He expressed interest in emailing, but I didn't want to use my personal address so I created a new address with a fake last name for my own personal safety.

We have chatted almost every night since, and today I felt that it was time to tell him my real name, and I wrote him an explanatory email, giving my reasons and apologizing profusely.

He is upset now, and said he doesn't feel like he can trust me because he was honest with me from the beginning. I told him that any contact would have to be initiated by him, but I feel like I've lost my best friend.

I feel so bad that I hurt him. Was I wrong to create this email with a fake name ? or is he overreacting?

? Unsure

DEAR UNSURE: You didn't need to assume a secret identity ? you only needed to leave off your last name on any communication until you wanted to disclose it. That having been said, this guy is overreacting.

Please, always proceed very cautiously when it comes to forming relationships online. Don't get too wrapped up in an online relationship before you meet the person, and always meet for coffee (no alcohol) in a public place.

DEAR AMY: I can empathize with "Upset Mother," who lent her daughter money and has yet to be paid back.

I also lent my daughter money, which she never repaid. On her birthday, Christmas and other special occasions her gift is a "coupon" for a certain value amount toward the loan. We will do this until the loan is paid off. She needs to learn that this is her responsibility.

Although I am sure she would rather receive a gift (or more money), she accepts the coupon graciously.

? Solvent Mother

DEAR MOTHER: I like this idea very much.
